Sleep lines Kathleen Mullen, Canada, 2007, video, 6:30 min. Hand-processed black and white imagery of two women at home - sleeping on the couch, preparing food, reading. The intimacy captured is both disquieting and poetic.
The New World (Le nouveau monde) Étienne Dhaene, France, 2006, video, 92 min. In this fresh and sly take on lesbian parenthood, things go awry right from the beginning. Lucie accidentally announces her need to have kids with her girlfriend Marion... via microphone to a karaoke club. When Marion agrees, they go through one train-wreck of a sperm donor after another. And when they tell their families, the real fun begins. Lucie's neurotic hippie parents worry that her desire to have kids means she's becoming "too normal". Marion's pathologically homophobic church-lady mom refuses to call Marion a mother, only because she's not the one giving birth. Just as things start to stabilize, the dyke-parent couple that are their role models go down in drunken messy flames. And their donor Hugo, whom they're hoping will take interest in the pregnancy, seems more interested in a poker game than an ultrasound. All this before the final trimester! Amidst the pile-up of trouble, The New World has plenty of warmth and humanity, as well. Family, the film shows us, is something you create, as much as it is something you're born into. What's more, the film subtly but successfully skewers France's homophobic laws about gay parenting. These wide-eyed mommies-to-be may have no idea what they're doing, but they're in it together. LOVE STORY
THIS SEXY, SWEET, AND YOUTHFUL SET OF FILMS AND VIDEOS CAPTURES ALL THE LONGING, LUSTING AND LANGUISHING THAT GOES WITH WANTING AND NEEDING TO LOVE ANOTHER.
Le Weekend Timothy Smith, UK, 2007, super8 to video, 14:30 min. A young, cynical French film student comes to London for the weekend to make a film project for his course. Disillusioned by his London experience, he's befriended by a stranger who shows him a side of the city, and himself, that he never would have seen. The story unfolds through his Super 8 film footage, and his voice-over narration gives us an insight into his thoughts and feelings throughout the journey.
For a Relationship Jim Verburg, Canada, 2006, video, 4:15 min. In this visually daring work, Verburg sorts through two years of photographs to make sense of the relationships in his life. Sexual, romantic and familial ties blend together in this intimate reflection on the artist's relationship with his practice, his lovers and his family. Inside Out Lesbian and Gay Film Festival of Toronto
The Kindness of Your Touch Angelo ango Visone, Italy, 2006, video, 6:18 min. The memory of the protagonist's dead companion is everywhere: in photographs, music, diary entries. During one of those sad, inconsolable afternoons, the haunting memory turns into a presence...
Le jeu du chat Simon Lanctôt, Canada, 2005, video, 6 min. Cat seeks mouse... mouse seeks cat... French with English Subtitles
Dogme 41: Lonely Child Pascal Robitaille, Canada, 2005, video, 50 min. William is constantly shooting video journals of his life to have as souvenirs for himself. Feeling the end of his relationship with Médéric, his young lover, William spends two days camping with him, taking advantage of the situation by filming the trip and their time spent with another young gay couple. The camera never stops shooting, even when Médéric decides to get it on with another guy in a tent. As Canada's first Dogme95 film, the story is shot on location, with natural lighting and live sound, the camera is hand-held and all superficial elements are forbidden. Yet somehow, in spite of these harsh restrictions during the filmmaking process, the result is warm and beautiful. French with English subtitles

ANOTHERNESS
SITUATED SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THIS AND THAT, HERE AND THERE, YOU AND ME, ...AND JUPITER AND MARS, THESE OTHERWORLDLY SHORTS FOCUS ON THE BODY, GENDER AND APPEARANCE, PLAY WITH NOTIONS OF BEING, COMMENT ON CATEGORIZATION, AND PROVIDE THE SPACE TO CONSIDER BEYOND THE LIMITS AND BORDERS OF THE MIND.
The Walk Terry Haines, Canada, 2006, video, 3:30 min. A glimpse into the life of a gender bender, where a simple walk becomes a fantastic spectacle, shocking and scandalizing those fortunate enough to lay eyes upon this trans persona.
Le Dernier Cri Erwin Olaf, Netherlands, 2006, video, 2:30 min. Everything is reminiscent of the 'homely' variation of modernism that was popular in the 1950s and 1960s. Everything is stylishly designed and decorated in tranquil grey-brown colours. There is no one to be seen, but the soft sounds penetrating from outside are soon drowned out by an ominous buzzing. We hear the old-fashioned ding-dong of a doorbell... Tati meets David Lynch. Esma Moukhtar, Netherlands Media Art Institute
The Gendercator Catherine Crouch, USA, 2007, video, 15 min.

The Gendercator is a short, satirical take on gender and social norms. The story uses the "Rip van Winkle" model to extrapolate from the past into a possible future.

Controversial anecdote: After mounting pressure from the trans communities - that deemed the film transphobic - Crouch's fantastical film was pulled from the 2007 edition of Frameline (the San Francisco lesbian and gay film festival) the first film to be pulled in its 31 year history.

Mars-Womb-Man James Diamond, Canada, 2006, video, 11:30 min. Mars-Womb-Man is a companion to Diamond's earlier film, The Man From Venus. In this, his most recent work, the artist finds answers for some of his old questions as he explodes binary concepts of man, woman, mother, and father.
Not so Black or White Col Cruise, Australia/UK, 2006, video, 4 min. "Hey, I don't fit into all those patterns that've been made for me!" says Chris Somers in Not so Black or White. He is "intersexual": even the category of 47XXY, created especially, is not able to capture the underlying person.
Veneration X Daniel McKernan & Richie Rennt, USA, 2007, video, 3 min. An homage and attempt to reach each other. Ghost-like images of the two of us fade in and out of static and seem to always just miss each other. Sing me that love song again.
New York Story Nicolas Jenkins, USA, 2006, video, 6:30 min. Genesis P-Orridge and his life partner Lady Jaye have garnered attention in recent years by undergoing medical procedures to eliminate their physical differences. "One of the central themes of our work is the malleability of physical and behavioural identity," they explain, giving rise to their imagined identity. The two hope to create a new gender, the pandrogyne, a hermaphroditic entity called Breyer P-Orridge.
Separation Erwin Olaf, Netherlands, 2003, video, 4 min. S&M meets the Cleavers in this kink inspired scene of domesticity.
Drawing Genesis Jaimz Azmundson, Canada, 2006, video, 3 min. Drawing Genesis is a saturated visual compendium, which traces the artist's performative gestures and visual residue. With the use of time lapse, still frames, lens obstruction, occult symbolism, subliminal imagery and blatant queer references; the film presents a ritual of artistic inspiration that invokes man's primal forces.
Das Gegenteil Daniel McKernan, USA, 2007, video, 6:46 min. An abstraction of the human form by wrapping the victim in plastic and having him break free from his constricted position. Through use of black background and high contrast effects, the notion of the canvas is blurred and the character dances briefly without frame. The results are disturbing and beautiful, like watching a butterfly emerge from its cocoon.
AGNIESZKA 2039 Martin Gavreau, UK/Poland, 2007, video, 12 min. A dark symphony from the future of Poland. Joy and pain go hand in hand when an angelic being is delivered the box of eternity and subjected to the fateful decision of the gods.

SENSE AND SENSUALITY
WITH TONGUE FIRMLY PLANTED IN CHEEK, AND CHEEK FIRMLY PLANTED IN TONGUE - WELL, YOU GET WHERE THIS IS GOING - THESE SHORTS ARE HERE TO STIMULATE, TITILLATE AND VIBRATE ALL REGIONS OF MIND BODY AND SOUL.
Salt Campbell Farquhar, New Zealand, 2006, video, 3 min. A love story about three people who share a passion for food... and each other.
Sex Toys Stories Kat-I & Nano Segler, USA, 2006, video, 5 min. What's your sex toy story? Women on the town Kat-I and Nano elicit an eyebrow-raising assortment of true tales of sex with objects.
Sexnoys Lamathilde, Canada, 2006, video, 1:30 min. Sextoys in their punk-noise period trying vaguely to be a pop melody.
Love Effect Juana Awad, Canada, 2007, video, 7:10 min. Love Effect is a poem born out of the need to shorten the distance between you and I. The form and the action mirror one another: two layers are superimposed while two bodies make love. The relationship of the two bodies/layers creates new shapes, and turns the space between them into moving light.
Yankee Lust Clark Nicolai, Canada, 2006, video, 3 min. Shot at the Folsom Street Fair in 2000, this piece enjoys the beauty of leather daddies in all their glory. No longer hidden in the darkness of the backrooms, they proudly stroll the sunlight streets of San Francisco in their best gear.
More British Sounds William E. Jones, USA, 2006, video, 8 min. Rejecting Jean-Luc Godard's statement that all one needs to make a movie are 'a girl and a gun,' Jones appropriates images from the gay porn film The British Are Coming (1986) and pairs them to dialogue from See You at Mao (1969) - also known as British Sounds - produced by the Dziga Vertov Group under the direction of Godard.
toybox Wrik Mead, Canada, 2007, video, 10 min. toybox combines creepiness and playfulness in a series of animations that manipulate the most misused toy of all - the penis. Stripped of eros and emotion, Mead's scenarios of sex-gone-mad play with the absurd qualities of an appendage and a desire that has a mind of its own... A blend of pixilation, claymation, stop-motion and cut-outs is tied together with new digital sampling experiments drawn from the seedy and sometimes sad world of men's sexual play. Julia Creet
Workbooks: Fuse Boy Guy Maddin and Jody Shapiro, Canada, 2005, 16mm to video, 4 min. A nightmarish tale of a janitor's lust.
Uropop Benny Nememerofsky Ramsey, Canada, 2006, video, 1:40 min. What a feeling! Splash Dance indeed!
Fist Power Tom de Pekin, France, 2002, video, 4 min. The name says it all.
Knee for All Hannah Jickling & Kevin Hegge, Canada, 2007, video, 4 min. Knee for All queers the body by moving away from genitals and genders and moving towards, into, around and all over the knees.
Give Piece of Ass a Chance Bruce LaBruce, Canada, 2006, video, 13 min. Give Piece of Ass a Chance is the third in a series of porn produced by The Scandelles (www.thescandelles.com) starring their alter egos, The Partistes. It shows the inception of these characters as a group of anti-war sex terrorists who kidnap a munitions heiress and fuckwash her using her family's deadly legacy. GPAC pokes loving fun at the misguided but consequential anti-war, anti-bourgeois and feminist groups of the early '70s and '90s and the media's natural obsession with their innate sexiness. The Scandelles set out to make porn based on genre and this one pays tribute to the political stylings of Bruce LaBruce, directed by the man himself.
